Amber Prison

It is called elektron, bussztyn. You know it as amber, I said, and pointed to my necklace--a spider caught forever with one leg raised.

It's a prison, she said.

She was his prison with her golden eyes and white hands. I wanted to show her his favorite piece--the copulating flies.

The Pearl

Margarite, the pearl.
She was his hidden gem, or so he claimed.
I related her more to the monstrous carbuncle that led to the birth of the pearl
I’d seen it myself how the oyster had a piece of polished shell forced into its gonads, and months later this surgical rape would result in a shiny round gem that is symbolic of all things pure and beautiful.
Then am I the oyster?
I had opened Henry to love and Fate decided to screw me and give him to her.

Diamond's Are a Girl's Best Friend

The sun’s white light hit the side of the mixed-cut diamond.
Between the tweezers under the lamp, magnified against black cloth
it had gleamed like ice from a virgin glacier. I kept it a week
before reporting it was flawless and spectacular.
Among the teapots and crustless sandwiches, she rippled her nails and a
rainbow danced against her white dress
to the oooohs of another well-wisher. Her smile was full of champagne.
I hated her.

Jet

He’d finally found the one worthy of wearing his grandmother’s priceless antique necklace.

Jet;
An empty hell.

There was a glimmer of hope to light the dark before, but not anymore.

Was the room this hot before?

Surely if she were in hell there’d be the brilliant glow of the consuming fires that awaited her, but for her even hell would lay empty; its fire entombed.

Birth of an Emerald

Mother Earth carries his essence deep within her womb, amid a magma chamber for many a moon until the time comes for him to form. He’s then rushed out on a river of hydrothermal fluids that escape from the magmas. It rushes along the fractures and fissures of the rocks around. As it gets further from lava the fluids cool and solidify, filling the crevices and forming mineral veins. And if fluorine and beryllium both survived the ride then they bond to form the Emerald.

Realization

So today I finally realized why I was never taken seriously as a writer.

After attending a lecture by Robert Pinsky today, I came to realize what it means to create a strong work of literature. For one, I've always loved rhyming and after taking a "Craft of Poetry" class for just a week, I found out that rhymes tend to not me taken as serious as prose.
Pinsky gave an amazing lecture about how Translation = Misnomer. I never gave that much thought to translated version of literary pieces but it never occurred to me that people don't just translated as close to the original meaning as possible.
He was talking about his translation of Dante's inferno and how he "Englished it" by making it strong enough to give a different perspective that somehow gave insight into the original. I loved that he used the shield of Perseus as a parallel for translation. The story is that Perseus had to use the reflection of Medusa from his shield to defeat her. The reasoning is that since you can't see the original, the reflection is the best you've got, and if you can't read the original, the translation is your other option... unless you want to learn a whole new language!

Here's to improving my writing based on what I learned today!

"Do You Want to Date My Avatar"

So thanks to this video someone posted on facebook, I found the new online series called The Guild. It's about a group of people who belong to an online gaming community and are basically addicted to the game. It's extremely amusing especially since I know real life people who resemble the characters!

I would highly recommend watching it. Every episode is about 5 minutes long.
